01 — Coverage areas

Three areas, each with traps
most people miss

Every line of coverage has its own timing rules and its own way of quietly costing you money. Here is what we watch for.

Medicare

Advantage · Supplement · Part D

One of the most commonly misunderstood areas of insurance. I help you think about doctor access, real prescription coverage, and total out-of-pocket exposure — not just the monthly premium.

  • Strict enrollment windows — timing is everything
  • Choosing on premium alone ignores true cost
  • Late Part B enrollment may result in a lasting premium surcharge
  • Network changes annually even if plan name doesn't

ACA Marketplace

Individual · Family · SEP enrollment

Income changes, SEP events, subsidy cliffs — ACA plans are more complex than the ad says.

  • Subsidies often go unclaimed — most people qualify
  • Lowest premium hides highest total cost
  • HMO/EPO networks may exclude specialists
  • Income changes mid-year can trigger subsidy repayment

Life Insurance

Term · Whole · Universal

Three decisions matter: how much coverage, how long, and underwriting readiness. I cut through the complexity.

  • Every year you wait, premiums increase
  • Waiting always costs more
  • Employer coverage is rarely portable
  • Riders add cost — most people need very few

03 — Decision support

The trade-offs nobody
explains up front

Every choice works beautifully for someone and backfires badly for someone else. The only useful question is which one you are.

Where it works

  • You're young and healthy with no chronic conditions
  • You have a large HSA to cover deductibles
  • You rarely use medical services beyond preventive care

Where it backfires

  • You have regular prescriptions or specialist visits
  • One hospitalization wipes out your premium savings
  • You underestimate your actual annual healthcare use

The lowest-premium plan almost never has the lowest total cost for people who actually use their insurance. Run the math on total out-of-pocket exposure before choosing.

Where it works

  • HMO: You have a primary care doctor you trust and rarely see specialists
  • PPO: You have multiple specialists or travel frequently
  • EPO: You want lower premiums and don't need out-of-network coverage

Where it backfires

  • HMO: Your specialist is out-of-network — you pay 100%
  • PPO: Higher premiums offset savings if you rarely use out-of-network
  • EPO: Emergency out-of-network care can be catastrophically expensive

Before enrolling in any plan, verify that your specific doctors — not just the hospital system — are in-network. Networks change annually.

Where it works

  • Advantage: You're healthy, stay local, and want low premiums
  • Supplement: You want predictable costs and travel frequently
  • Part D standalone: You take few or no prescriptions

Where it backfires

  • Advantage: Your cardiologist or oncologist leaves the network mid-year
  • Supplement: You miss the guaranteed issue window and face underwriting
  • Part D: Your drug moves to a higher tier, doubling your cost

Medicare plans change every year — even if the plan name stays the same. An annual review is not optional; it's the only way to catch changes before they hurt you.

Where it works

  • You have a specific income gap in retirement to fill
  • You have other liquid assets and won't need this money for 7–10 years
  • You want guaranteed income you can't outlive

Where it backfires

  • You need access to the funds within the surrender period
  • The income rider fee erodes growth more than the benefit is worth
  • You buy an annuity to 'invest' rather than to solve an income problem

Annuities are income tools, not investment vehicles. If you don't have a specific income problem to solve, there's usually a better option.

05 — Community stories

What the community says

Linda M.Knoxville, TN · Medicare client
“I was about to pick the lowest-premium ACA plan until we looked at what my deductible would actually mean for our family. The math was eye-opening. We picked a better plan and spent less overall.”
Robert T.Asheville, NC · ACA client
